Zaruhi Postanjyan is one of those exceptional MPs who always has visited and visits prisons with the aim of defending, supporting political prisoners, and offering legal assistance, reads a statement issued today by the Committee for the Protection of Political Prisoners and Persecuted People.
The statement also touches upon the recent arrest of Postanjyan’s brother, Tigran Postanjyan. As previously reported, Tigran Postanjyan, who works for the local government of Yerevan’s Arabkir district, is being charged with allegedly accepting a bribe of 100,000 drams (about $275 US) last September to turn a blind eye to illegal construction carried out by a local resident. The Postanjyans and their supporters claim that this is political vengeance, retaliation to Zaruhi Postanjyan’s political activities.
“Judging from media reports and the work style of the prosecution and the National Security Service, this is another fixed case that aims to hinder Zaruhi Postanjyan’s active political and civic work,” reads the statement.
Armenia’s Committee for the Protection of Political Prisoners and Persecuted People notes that it has often expected and received Zaruhi Postanjyan’s support.
“We express our support to Zaruhi Postanjyan and we call on the public to more actively fight for their own rights. This and other kinds of political persecutions in our country can end only through the public’s united and constant struggle against this regime,” concludes the statement.
