The Faces of March 1 Victims in Armenia: Hovhannes Hovhannisyan

Hovhannes Hovhannisyan died on Mar. 1, 2008, in Yerevan, Armenia. His wife, Lilya Hovhannisyan, told Epress.am a little about her husband’s life.

“Hovhannes Hovhannisyan was born on Feb. 13, 1961. He went to the school in Kond [a district in Yerevan]. After graduating from school, he served in the Soviet army. He worked as a driver, but he was a man of all trades. He was also a good father and good husband. We’ve lost a gold [mine] and it wasn’t worth it to lose this gold in the name of dirty gestures.”

Today is the third anniversary of Mar. 1, 2008, when mass protests against alleged electoral fraud, organized by supporters of unsuccessful presidential candidate, first president of the Republic of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrossian, followed the presidential election of Feb. 19, 2008, in Armenia. On Mar. 1, 2008, national police and military forces, called in to disperse the crowds, used “excessive force and violence” which left 10 people dead and many more wounded.
