Armenian Authorities Won’t Tolerate Opposition’s Ultimatum

Local daily Yerkir reports that commenting on Armenian National Congress (HAK) leader Levon Ter-Petrossian’s 15 demands (13 of which are aimed at the ruling authorities) announced at the rally yesterday, Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) spokesperson Eduard Sharmazanov said:

“First and foremost, he has to realize that addressing the authorities with an ultimatum is meaningless. Unlike them, this government has always been ready for dialogue, but will never tolerate any ultimatums. In the past three years, the president, on at least three occasions, has invited [HAK] to consultations, to discuss the issues facing the country, but they have always refused [to attend] these meetings.

“If during his days of rule, they had addressed him in the form of an ultimatum, as a result of which he submitted his resignation, such a thing won’t happen with this government. And, the most important, mediating between the public and the government is meaningless. The authorities are well aware of the public’s concerns and are doing everything possible to mitigate them.”
