Police will be implementing exceptional (security) measures on Mar. 26, before the Armenia-Russia Euro 2012 qualifying match in Yerevan.
“The game, really, will be a celebration. About 1,500 fans have arrived from Russia, but thanks to [regular] daily cooperation with Russia’s law enforcement bodies, it will be possible to control the situation,” said Yerevan Police Chief Nerses Nazaryan, speaking to journalists in the Armenian capital today.
“We mustn’t allow this football celebration to become something else. Very strict measures to maintain [public] order will be implemented, exceptional measures, even such that weren’t implemented during the Armenia-Turkey match. We are going to try to make it so there’s no contact between the two sides’ fans. If they don’t violate the order, they can cheer however they want,” he said.
Nazaryan said a large screen will be put up in Charles Azanvour Square (near Moscow Cinema) where people can watch the match.
Asked by Epress.am whether unconfirmed media reports that only Russian fans’ sobriety will be checked prior to entering the stadium on the day of the match are true, the police chief said:
“There is a corresponding instrument [not a breathalyzer] through which all fans without exception will pass. For this reason, we urge all fans to strictly maintain public order.”
