Yerevan Police Chief Nerses Nazaryan didn’t rule out the possibility that the Armenian National Congress (HAK) will be allowed to enter Liberty Square on Apr. 8.
At a meeting with reporters Friday, Epress.am asked the police chief why HAK was permitted to enter Liberty Square on Mar. 17 when Yerevan City Hall had forbade holding a rally there
Nazaryan said HAK’s intention to enter Liberty Square was likewise a surprise for them (presumably, the police).
“Let me clearly say, when during high-level negotiations we made certain concessions to close the street, that perhaps provided them with the impression that if we conceded here, then we’ll concede there too. It seems to me that this became the motive for them to go to Liberty Square,” he said.
According to Nazaryan, the Armenian National Congress controlled the actions of the participants in its Mar. 17 rally and maintained order and for this reason a decision was made to allow the opposition demonstrators to go to Liberty Square.
Asked by Epress.am whether it’s possible that in the event that HAK is likewise able to maintain discipline at its Apr. 8 rally would police again condone the group’s entrance into the square, Nazaryan said with a smile, “We’ll see on the spot. You should not interpret my smile as something else; let us see how it will go on the spot.”
