Day of Opposition Rally Once Again ‘Coincided’ with Other Events

On Apr. 1, Vahagn Hayotsyan, the executive secretary of the opposition Pan-Armenian National Movement party, submitted a request to hold a rally and march on Apr. 20 from 4 pm to 10 pm in Yerevan’s Liberty Square.

On Apr. 4 Yerevan City Hall denied the request for a rally at Liberty Square, stating that other events will be held on those days — and the days following.

The municipality, however, suggested the opposition group hold a rally outside the Matenadaran (Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts), and also approved the request for a march on the following route: Liberty Square – Mashtots Ave. – Amiryan St. – Republic Square – Nalbandyan St. – Tumanyan St. – Liberty Square.

As previously reported, just days earlier, the numerous children’s rides and attractions on Liberty Square were removed. Only the stage is left standing on which different bands, choirs and dance troupes have been giving performances (mainly on the weekends).
