The statement on the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process made by first president of the Republic of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrossian during his interview with BBC Russian is no different than that which comprises the Madrid Principles which are being discussed today, said head of the Heritage Party parliamentary faction Stepan (Styopa) Safaryan at a press conference in Yerevan today.
Recall, responding to the journalist’s question as when were Armenia and Azerbaijan the closest to signing a peace deal, Ter-Petrossian yesterday said, “I think, in 1997. To hand over some territories to Azerbaijan, to define a ceasefire, to create an intermediate state for Nagorno-Karabakh and then resolve the question of Nagorno-Karabakh’s status.”
“In the Karabakh issue, we are standing before the threat of the point of return. During the terms of the three presidents, the versions of settlement [proposed] don’t differ from one another, Safaryan said.
According to the opposition MP, in the Karabakh issue, the rules of the game need to be changed.
Recall, the Heritage Party last year put forth a bill in parliament on recognizing the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh; however, it was voted down by a majority of MPs. Only the 13 representatives of the Heritage Party and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) voted in favor. Coalition parties did not participate in the voting.
