Police Ask Armenian National Congress Members for Additional Information on March 1

The process of the local police division calling Armenian National Congress activists in the city of Abovian in for questioning regarding the events of Mar. 1, 2008, begun todays ago in Abovian. This news was told to Epress.am by Pan-Armenian National Movement (HHSh) vice-chair Samvel Abrahamyan.

“Our boys, who at one time stood witness in the Mar. 1 case, are being called to the police division and they are being asked for any additional information they might have regarding the Mar. 1 events,” said Abrahamyan, adding that this is as a result of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s recent call for “greater vigor” in the Mar. 1 investigation.

“Probably about 5 people have been called in for questioning, but I assume they’ll call 10 more. But let me say, everything is being done quite specifically. They’re calling in people without a fuss and asking them to provide information if they have anything else to add,” he said.

Recall, meeting with Armenia’s top security officials, prosecutors and judges on Apr. 20, the Armenian president said he expected “new momentum and a pronounced activation” in efforts to identify and punish those responsible for the deadly street clashes between security forces and opposition protesters, RFE/RL’s Armenian service reported.

“Especially for me, this is a very important issue, and my demand addressed to you is to once again and more meticulously address even those circumstances where you think there can be nothing new,” he said. “Try to find new ways of solving those incidents.”

“A lot of time has passed; maybe there are people who were witnesses and didn’t want to cooperate with law-enforcement bodies at the time but have now different approaches. That’s also very possible,” he added.
