Armenians Attacked in Tbilisi on Religious Grounds

A few followers of the Georgian Orthodox Church beat three ethnic Armenians late at night on Saturday on Ketevan Tsamebeli Ave. in Tbilisi. As reported by ExpressNews, citing witnesses, the incident took place on religious grounds.

According to eye witnesses, when demonstrators came out of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, 10 youth attacked a group of Armenians. They began to kick the Armenian youth, while shouting, “Whatever hapens, blame only yourselves.” One of them shouted, “Leave them; they got what was coming to them.” The attack lasted 5 minutes, after which the young men fled.

Recall, a few thousand of people, led by priests from the Georgian Orthodox Church, marched for the second day in Tbilisi on Sunday to express their support for Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II’s position and protest legislative amendments which awarded legal status to religious minorities in Georgia.
