Leila Lopes from Angola has been crowned as the new Miss Universe, beating 88 other competitors to win the title in Sao Paulo, Brazil — the first time the notorious beauty pageant was held in a South American country.

Lopes took the crown from last year’s winner, Mexico’s Ximena Navarrete.

In this year’s contest, Miss Ukraine Olesia Stefanko was first runner-up and Miss Brazil Priscila Machado was second runner-up.

Leading up to the final round, organizers declared the most photogenic contestant to be Miss Sweden Ronnia Fornstedt and bestowed the award of “Miss Congeniality” to Miss Montenegro Nikolina Lončar. Both women were awarded a $1,000 cash prize and a gift from pageant sponsor Diamond Nexus Labs each.

The final 5 were contestants representing Ukraine, the Philippines, China, Brazil and Angola.

The Miss Universe Organization, which runs the pageant, is owned by Donald Trump and the National Broadcasting Company (NBC).
