Armenian Film Wins Medal in UNICA Independent Film Festival

Armenia participated in the 73rd UNICA Film Festival, which took place from Aug. 20 to 28 in Luxembourg, and won the silver medal for Shavarsh Hambardzumanyan’s film “Brutal Romance,” Center of All-Armenian Noncommercial Cinema (CANC) President Artashes Hovhannisyan told Epress.am. The festival, which has been held since 1937, this year showcased films from 36 countries including Armenia, which participated for the first time this year.

“We had entered 7 films, of which Brutal Romance took home a medal, while the others received honors. During the first PanArmenian [Independent] Film Festival in Moscow Cinema from May 28–30, these 7 were selected as the best films, which then participated in the festival. They were 10–12-minute feature, documentary and animation films,” he said.

Hovhannisyan also noted that CANC is establishing branches in different parts of the world where they receive films which in the future can be screened at film festivals. According to the CANC president, this allows not only Armenians living in Armenia, but also Diasporan Armenians to participate in festivals.

“Our aim is to develop original non-commercial films and to tell people that it’s never too late to shoot a film,” he added.
