Champions League: Ajax Wins Without Araz Özbiliz

The third matchday of the Champions League kicked off on Oct. 18. Manchester United secured its first win in this season’s Champions League, 2-0 at Otelul Galati, Bloomberg Businessweek reports. Wayne Rooney got both goals in Bucharest from the penalty spot as United, a three-time European champion, struggled against a Romanian team playing its debut season in European soccer’s elite club competition.

CSKA Moscow earned their first victory of the campaign with a 3-0 triumph over Turkey’s Trabzonspor, while Real Madrid continue to look like one of the teams to beat in this year’s tournament after Jose Mourinho’s side defeated Lyon 4-0 at El Santiago Bernabeu, ESPN Soccernet reports.

In the same group as Real Madrid and Olympique Lyon, Ajax — without Araz Özbiliz, the newest player on Armenia’s national team — breathed new life into their Champions League campaign by easing past Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 in an entertaining Group D match, reports Yahoo! Ireland and UK Sport. The win gave Ajax, who last won the European Cup in 1995 after lifting it three times in a row from 1971-73, four points from three games, level with Lyon ahead of the reverse fixture against Dinamo in the Amsterdam Arena on Nov. 2.

Recall, due to injury, Ozbiliz is currently not playing in his squad.
