The Fagaras Mountains provide the backdrop to Romania’s Lake Balea Ice Hotel, which will reopen later this month to welcome hotel guests.
Its remote location, at over 2000 m, can be reached only by cable car in the winter, making it an exclusive 10–14 room hotel. Set amidst breathtaking scenery, the Ice Hotel is rebuilt every year — so no two years are the same.
Typically, temperatures range from -2 to +2ºC, the ice beds are covered with reindeer fur, with mattresses placed on top for comfort. Bedding, additional furs and special sleeping bags are all provided with bathroom facilities nearby.
Not too far from the ice hotel is the Ice Church where many a couple have come to tie the knot. Not surprisingly, it has become fashionable for young couples to move away from traditional weddings. Newlyweds want their weddings to be remembered for a lifetime — so what better than a white wedding in a glass house?
