The Sardarapat movement wants to establish an alternative ruling authority in Armenia, said commander of the Shushi battalion during the Nagorno-Karabakh War and one of the founders of the Sardarapat civic movement Jirair Sefilian, speaking to journalists in the Armenian capital today.
“Our goal is not a regime change, but the creation of new statehood. We won’t rush, but will move forward with steady steps,” he said, adding that Sardarapat isn’t naming specific dates, but promises that “in the coming days, weeks” it will show how to establish a lawful ruling authority parallel to an unlawful ruling authority.
According to Sefilian, all were witness to recent revolutions in several other countries, while in Armenia, these revolutions have begun in people’s souls and minds.
The Sardarapat representative sees a difference between Armenia and other countries. In other countries, people have come out onto the square to start a revolution, while in Armenia, such upheavals are not necessary — first, people have to think about how to move forward.
“If we assume our plan, revolution without upheavals will yield meat and blood [i.e.it will reach its aim, be implemented],” he said, describing aspects of the plan. Sardarapat considers the 2012 parliamentary elections period as the best time to mobilize the people’s forces and this movement is going to move in this direction, aiming to change the current situation in the country.
Another participant at today’s press conference, Sardarapat member Tigran Khzmalyan, added that to participate in the upcoming elections, it’s necessary to be free from “this rancid Electoral Commission.”
“If after [the events of] Mar. 1, 2008, no one has yet bore responsibility, then what has to be the response given to the people at the next elections? Also very important is who is organizing the election, who is counting and who is publicizing the results,” he said, emphasizing that the body which organizes the elections, that is, the government, will never admit its own defeat, and from the start, it’s important to be free from those people.
