PACE Co-Rapporteurs to Meet with Mar. 1 Victims’ Families

Families of the victims of the tragic events of Mar. 1, 2008, in Yerevan will meet with John Prescott (pictured) and Axel Fischer, co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for the monitoring of Armenia, 9 am on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the Armenia Marriott Hotel. Recall, the co-rapporteurs are in the Armenian capital Jan. 16–17 on a fact-finding visit, during which time they will meet with several high-level officials.

Alla Hovhannisyan, mother of Mar. 1 victim Tigran Khachatryan and president of the March 1 NGO, told Epress.am her expectations for the upcoming meeting.

“We, firstly, will raise the issue of why till today the murders haven’t been solved. We will express our dissatisfaction with their work, which is by nature an imitation. In addition, we will also say that due to their work, the last PACE statement on closing the page on Mar. 1 was made, for which we will also express our discontent,” she said.

Note, the co-rapporteurs’ visit will mainly focus on the follow-up to PACE Resolution 1837 (2011) – on the investigation into the ten casualties of the March 2008 events, the creation of an independent police complaints mechanism, and civilian oversight over the police – as well as on preparations for the 2012 parliamentary elections, and on the priority areas for the monitoring procedure.
