‘Persia Tower’ Project Pulled. Skyscraper Won’t be Built in Downtown Yerevan

Didas International, the company planning, to construct a 50-storey mixed-use building called Persia Tower in downtown Yerevan, has pulled the project, Union of Architects of Armenia Chair Mkrtich Minasyan told Epress.am.

“Seeing the public’s reaction to the project, the developers told us they’re waiving the idea to build that 50-storey building,” he said, adding that it’s possible the company might offer another building project, but building such a skyscraper in downtown Yerevan is ruled out.

Recall, in Nov. 2011, word got out that such a building was going to be constructed in Charles Aznavour Square (in the area between Moscow Cinema and the Artists’ Union of Armenia) in downtown Yerevan. The project, “Persia Tower,” was proposed by Aryan Shahabyan, an Iranian architect living in Vienna.

Not only the public, but also architects, urban development planners and seismologists were against the idea. According to seismologists, building a skyscraper is dangerous for Yerevan, considering the city’s seismic risks.

As previously reported, Yerevan City Hall had given the green light on the project without running it by the Urban Development Council.

The only reason the project was pulled, according to the Union of Architects of Armenia chair, was because of public pressure.
