Armenian Parliament Approves Bill to Raise Officials’ Salaries

With 69 in favor, 37 against, and 6 abstentions, Armenia's National Assembly passed a bill to raise the salaries of government officials. Before the vote, MPs once again expressed their opinion on the draft law. Armenian National Congress (HAK) MP Hrant Bagratyan, in particular, was in favor of such a bill.

"The government should increase the salary of the succeeding government. This is not a joke. The same refers also to the president's salary," he said.

Head of HAK's parliamentary faction Levon Zurabyan said they will vote against the bill. The same was said also by the secretary of the Prosperous Armenia parliamentary faction, Naira Zohrabyan.

Heritage Party MP Zaruhi Postanjyan, in turn, said it is "immoral" to increase the salaries of officials when people live in poverty. National Assembly President Hovik Abrahamyan warned the opposition MP to express herself "within the limits of correctness".
