Shots on Armenia-Azerbaijan Border Tied to ‘Black January’: Defense Minister

Experience shows that tensions flare on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border when there is an important political event or shots are associated with a day having historical significance, said Armenian Minister of Defense Seyran Ohanyan at a press conference in Yerevan today.

According to him, the shots fired from Azerbaijan in recent days are associated with "Black January". Recall, on the night of January 19–20, 1990, Soviet troops took violent action to suppress political opposition in Baku.

Don't forget, the defense minister said, that January was "black" also for Armenians, who were subjected to pogroms in Sumgait and Baku.

Asked if there is a threat of renewed hostilities, Ohanyan said there's always a threat, but at this moment such a development is unlikely to happen. Nevertheless, the Armenian side is always ready for any development, he added.
