22-year-old A. Hakobyan was detained on Sunday evening not far from the Freedom Square in Yerevan during the rally against the hike in electricity rates, the Investigative Committee of Armenia said in an official statement issued on Monday, June 29. A criminal case has been initiated in Yerevan City Investigation Department for commiting violence against a police officer; Hakobyan was arrested, authorities said.
The young man, as stated by the Investigative Committe, punched officer Gevorg Amyan twice during the rally on Freedom Square.
According to the official statement, the arrested refused to testify and asked for a public defender. Forensic examination will be conducted to determine the nature and severity of the injury caused to the police officer.
