An Armenian civilian who was detained by Azerbaijani security forces after crossing the northeastern border between the two countries on November 8 has been repatriated today, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement.
The handover of Lusine Abovyan, a 73-year-old resident of the village of Koti in the Armenian Tavush province, took place at the international border between the Azerbaijani town of Gazakh and the Armenian town of Ijevan under the auspices of the ICRC.
“Acting as a neutral intermediary and in accordance with its mandate, the ICRC facilitated this repatriation in conjunction with the Azerbaijani and Armenian authorities. The individual in question had previously confirmed to ICRC staff that she was returning of her own free will. ICRC representatives were also in contact with her family prior to the operation,” the Committee said.
