A powerful hailstorm struck parts of Armenia Sunday evening, totally destroying fruit and vegetable crops in dozens of villages in Aragatsotn and Armavir regions. According to preliminary data, as many as 47 villages were hit in Armavir alone, while the number of affected communities in Aragatsotn reaches 20, Armenian Zhoghovurd daily reports.
The paper stresses that it is the third time in the current year that heavy hailstorms cause massive damage in Armenia's villages and strip local farmers of their harvest for the year.
“After the hailstorm on May 18 which struck nearly 20 villages in Armavir, officials blamed the damages on anti-hail stations' alleged failure to function properly. This time, however, they claim that the storm was so strong that the stations would not even be able to prevent the dire consequences,” Zhoghovurd writes.
