Armenian Conscript Killed by Azeri Fire, Officials Say

A 20-year-old soldier was killed on January 7 at around 1:30pm at the combat positions of a north-eastern military unit of the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army. According to a statement issued by the NKR Defense Ministry, conscript Vache N Chilingaryan was fatally wounded by Azerbaijani fire.

In conversation with Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper, Suliko Shushanyan, the head of Chilingaryan’s native village of Shorzha, said the soldier had received the bullet when rushing to fellow servicemen’s aid. “He found out that a friend had been wounded and hurried to help him, receiving a bullet himself. Another soldier then rushed to Vache’s help and was also wounded. We have one dead and two wounded,” the village head said.

Haykakan Zhamanak writes that Artsrun Hovhannisyan, the spokesperson for the Armenian Defense Ministry, did not confirm the information about the two wounded servicemen.

On January 6, the Investigative Committee of Armenian reported the death of 25-year-old serviceman Mher Ziroyan. “According to preliminary information, contract serviceman Senior Lieutenant Ziroyan died at about 2:10 am on January 6 as a result of gas poisoning in the bathroom of his apartment,” the Committee said.
