Yerevan Gunman adamant on Continuing Hunger Strike Despite Deteriorating Health

The health condition of Armen Bilyan, a member of the Daredevils of Sasun armed group who has been on a hunger strike in prison for 23 days, worsened in the courtroom during a January 10 hearing, according to his lawyer Armine Fanyan, the life of her client “is in danger.”

Recall, Daredevils of Sasun members Smbat Barseghyan and Armen Bilyan – both refusing food for 15 and 26 days, respectively – demand that they are transferred to Armavir jail from Yerevan’s Nubarashen prison. In addition, Bilyan demands that he is provided with proper medical treatment in a civilian hospital.

At the Wednesday court hearing, the judge read out a letter from the administration of Nubarashen, which said that the inmates “are provided with the necessary medical care, and there is no need for their transfer.”

Lawyer Fanyan, in turn, stated that she “saw a discrepancy” between the response she had personally received from the prison administration and the letter read out by the judge; the former, she claimed, had said that the decision of transferring Bilyan to Armavir was to be issued by the body that carries out the proceedings, that is, the court.

Despite his deteriorating health condition, Bilyan once again announced today that he had no intention of ending his hunger strike.
