Drivers of public transportation vehicles and taxis servicing routes from Shamshadin, Abovyan, Armavir and Etchmiadzin to Yerevan on Thursday were allegedly instructed to cease working and not to drive passengers to Yerevan. Furthermore, police in the eastern Armenian town of Chambarak allegedly gave instructions to drivers of the public transport minibuses (commonly referred to as marshrutkas), which were full of passengers coming to Yerevan for work, not to operate.
This news was conveyed to Epress.am by the Armenian National Congress central office, which also received calls this morning from Gavar and Chambarak by residents who said police had shut down the roads leading to Yerevan. Recall, an opposition rally and march is set to take place today at 7 pm in the Armenian capital.
This is not the first time that the opposition group has received calls of road closures ahead of its planned rally.
Recall, as well, that after the last rally in August, several citizens sent a letter to the Armenian Minister of Transport and Communications, asking for the reasons for these barriers and to apply appropriate measures to those transport companies that restrict the free movement of people. The ministry has yet to respond to the letter.
