Iran cannot mediate a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza told SalamNews.
He noted that Azerbaijan and Armenia are in favor of a settlement to the conflict through the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group.
“We should therefore welcome the efforts of Azerbaijan and Armenia. I believe that the conflict should be resolved peacefully through the efforts of the parties. A military version to resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is impossible,” said the ambassador.
Recall, Iran has repeatedly expressed readiness to mediate a peaceful settlement to the conflict.
The disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh broke away from Azerbaijan after a bloody war in the 1990s and is populated mainly by ethnic Armenians. Today it exists as a de-facto independent state under an uneasy ceasefire, and OSCE-brokered efforts to resolve its status have so far been unsuccessful.
