Rusal Armenal CJSC plans to establish a facility for industrial waste on its property on the left bank of the Hrazdan River. The facility is to be operational for 10 years and span an open area of 3,300 square meters, reports local daily Haykakan Zhamanak.
The newspaper emphasizes that the project can lead to serious environmental issues, especially since the plant and the future industrial waste facility are in Yerevan's Arabkir administrative district. There is a residential area located 500 meters from the plant. The facility will contain waste considered to be1st to 5th degree hazardous: mercury lamps, mercury thermometers, lead batteries, black metal scrap, bronze waste, a mixture of various plastic waste, and so on.
"Environmentalists are concerned that water in Yerevan might be poisoned from the waste," reports the paper.
