28 residents of the town of Dzithankov in Armenia's Shirak province have been infected with viral gastroenteritis caused by contaminated drinking water; 4 of them have been taken to the Gyumri Medical Center, Epress.am was informed by Dzithankov village head Hovik Poghosyan.
The contamination, as stated by the official, is not due to the water supply system in the town, but has occurred in the source water entering the region. The infection, he said, has also spread to the neighboring towns and some villages of Aragatsotn province.
The RA Ministry of Health reported on Saturday that chemical and microbiological laboratory examinations of the water in Dzithankov and a number of villages of Aragatsotn province revealed “deviations,” while the patients were diagnosed with dysentery. 17 residents of Aragatsotn were hospitalized in the infectious department of the Talin Medical Center. The patients were in a moderate condition and showed signs of improvement, the Ministry said on September 12.
On Monday, September 14, Epress.am contacted the medical center to receive an update on the patients' condition, but to little avail. The entire personnel, the hospital said, was busy treating the patients, as well as visiting the villages where the infection was detected.
