An inmate in the Hrazdan jail has filed a complaint with Armenia's Special Investigation Service (SIS) against prison officials, alleging that he was subjected to ill-treatment by the prison head and several other officers because of his sexual orientation.
Prison officials, as stated in A. M.'s complaint, insulted and kept him in a quarantine cell, refusing to transfer the inmate to a regular one. Officials also allegedly restricted the duration of the inmate's phone calls, and took him unreasonably to a punishment cell, which resultied in him resorting to multiple acts of self mutilation.
In a statement issued Monday morning, SIS said an investigation is currently underway into the officials' alleged abuse of authority.
