Threats to Human Rights Defender Artur Sakunts For Criticizing Putin

A number of NGOs have issued a statement condemning life threats to Human Rights Defender Artur Sakunts and demanding from law enforcement bodies to investigate the case and bring criminal charges against the person making these threats.

On March 20, at 10:29, human rights organization Helsinki Citizens Assembly in Vanadzor received a phone call on the office’s legal counselling phone number from +79102119294 number. A man talking in Armenian on the other end of the line, first made sure he had called the HCAV office, then started using swear words and threatened to injure Artur Sakunts, head of HCAV, if he continued to criticize Vladimir Putin.

HCAV has reported this as a threat of violence to respective law enforcement bodies.

NGOs, including Transparency International, Open Society Foundations, Public Journalism Club, “Asparez” Club of Journalists, Union of Informed Citizens and many others that joined the statement later find this abuse of expression intolerable and call on the enforcement bodies to take urgent measures to bring this person to criminal liability, especially if he is a citizen of Armenia.
