Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev gave five orthodox icons to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Baku. The icons were detained by Azerbaijan customs officers while they being attempted to be illegally import into Azerbaijan from Russia, reports RIA Novosti, as well as the Azerbaijan Business Center.
“People tried to these icons illegally from Russia. Our customs officers found them. The criminals were subjected to liability. We are giving you these icons because they should be in your country,” Aliyev said.
Medvedev thanked Aliyev, naming this decision “a friendly gesture.”
“We appreciate it very much,” said the Russian leader.
