On a recent morning, the women of St. Leon Armenian Church of Fair Lawn, New Jersey, gathered in the parish kitchen to prepare 200 pounds of string cheese the old-fashioned way for their upcoming annual food festival, reports NorthJersey.com.
The event has become a known food destination, attended not only by the area’s Armenian community, but by anyone with an appreciation for homemade Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. It’s become so popular that they’ve added an express takeout stand, and much of the food sells out before the weekend is over.
Leading up to the fête, in addition to a total of 350 pounds of string cheese, the church’s women will prepare 3,000 yalanchi (stuffed grape leaves) and 1,800 kufteh (stuffed meatballs).
The festival, which is free of charge, kicks off this Friday through Sunday.
