It’s not clear from the leaks what’s really going on; what’s clear is what explanations Armenia’s authorities gave and what was said in Washington. This statement by Armenian National Congress coordinator Levon Zurabyan was a response to a request for comments by Epress.am on the US diplomatic cables recently released by WikiLeaks that testified to Armenia’s arms transfer to Iran.
“But we will be following closely leaks from WikiLeaks. I think that many interesting things will be revealed. Information about Armenia haven’t really been revealed, and I think that serious surprises await us. In any case, we all have to be responsible, not gloat and not attempt to speculate, but rather, gather the information, and when the need arises, we will make a corresponding statement,” he said.
As previously reported, a Jan. 14, 2009 US cable revealed that RA President Serzh Sargsyan and NSS Chair Gorik Hakobyan did not deny Armenia’s arms transfer to Iran. In yet another cable released by WikiLeaks, the US threatened wide-ranging sanctions if the Armenian government did not halt arms transfers to Iran, which they say resulted in Iranian proxies killing US soldiers in Iraq.
