Editor of local daily Yerkir Harutyun Harutyunyan considers Republican Party MP, businessman and owner of Great Valley (a producer of alcoholic beverages) Tigran Arzakantsyan’s lawsuit against the newspaper to be amusing.
As reported by local daily Aravot (“Morning”) today, Arzakantsyan (pictured) filed a lawsuit with the Court of General Jurisdiction of Kentron and Nork Marash Administrative Districts against local daily Yerkir (“Country”), claiming that the newspaper has sullied his honor and dignity in an article (part of a series) titled “131 faces and masks” in Yerkir’s Jan. 13 issue. Note in the series, Yerkir usually features MPs, showcasing their activities and facts related to their past.
“I’m guessing what ruling the court will make because the newly adopted law is clearly connected to silencing media resources,” he said.
According to the chief editor, they don’t see any instance of defamation in the article in question. “We just accessed Russian and Armenian media.”
Recall, on Feb. 9, a court ordered another local daily, Haykakan Jamanak (“Armenian Times”), to pay 2 million 44 thousand AMD (about $5,600 US) each to three MPs, Ruben Hayrapetyan, Samvel Aleksanyan and Levon Sargsyan for “harm caused to honor, dignity and business reputation.”
