Monument to Fallen Russian Soldiers in Armenian Village to be Restored

Upon an initiative by Russian Ambassador to Armenia Vyacheslav Kovalenko, reconstruction and restoration work has begun on the monument commemorating Russian soldiers who died in the 1827 Battle of Oshakan, when Eastern Armenia was liberated from Persian rule and annexed by Russia. The Oshakan victory was immortalized in 1833–1834 through the monument in honor of the fallen Russian soldiers.

Currently, an Armenian-Russian charitable organization called “Matter of Honor” is taking on the reconstruction, according to the press service of the Russian embassy in Armenia.

Recall, this organization also rebuilt the Hill of Honor memorial in Gyumri, which commemorates Russian army officers who died during the Russian-Turkish wars of the 19th century. The renovated memorial was unveiled on Aug. 20, 2010, with the participation of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
