UEFA president Michel Platini said in an interview with AFP that giving the right to host the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship to Poland and Ukraine might have been a mistake.
“But we did it and we have to face this great challenge,” Platini said. “After all, we are suffering terribly…and it will be so even to the final of the tournament…Ukraine is unfortunately not Germany and in addition there is now a crisis … However, everything is going well and the people going there will have a great time. And unlike the last World Cup in South Africa it will be really warm, so it will be a great atmosphere,” he said.
On Mar. 22, Platini was reelected as president of UEFA. There have been some doubts as to whether Ukraine will manage to fulfill certain UEFA stipulations and UEFA has threatened over the last two years to abort the plans for Poland and Ukraine to host next year’s tournament, reports Cogo: Central and Eastern Europe Matters.
