The names of the four citizens of Georgia who died in the United Nations plane crash in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, have become known. As previously reported, the operator of the plane, Georgian flag carrier Airzena Georgian Airways, said the crew was Georgian.
Among them are pilot David Tsutskiridze, crew member Guram Kepulaze and technician Albert Manyukov. Their bodies have already been identified.
The fourth is most likely crew commander David Hovhannisyan, though his body has not yet been identified, reports Georgia Online. Of the passengers, 20 were UN staff.
The plane crashed during landing, broke into two and burst into flames, according to a UN source in Kinshasa.
The plane was carrying UN officials and peacekeepers travelling from the northeastern city of Kisangani to Kinshasa’s N’Djili airport, according to a UN statement.
According to Airzena representatives, the plane was technically sound and was last checked on Dec. 22 at Germany’s Lufthansa air carrier dock.
