President of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Bako Sahakyan (pictured) considers possible the escalation of tensions with Azerbaijan if the international community continues its inertness or non-action as it does today. Sahakyan said this himself in an interview with Ekho Moskvy (“Echo of Moscow”) radio.
The threat that exists in the region today, in the NKR leader’s opinion, applies not only to Karabakh and carries much greater danger than it’s acceptable to say. “We believe that the face of Azerbaijan’s political leadership today shows a new form of terrorism, and it concerns not only Karabakh and the people of Karabakh and Armenia. This threat applies equally to the international community and the entire civilization.
“And we also notice that the international community has not taken adequate steps to reduce tensions in the region, although such attempts are made by the OSCE Minsk Group, and there are calls for Azerbaijan’s leadership to behave more correctly and constructively.
“Nevertheless, these calls, in the final measure, are inadequate. And we believe that the international community must take certain proactive steps, which will result in Azerbaijan respecting international norms and these actions [of Baku], which sometimes contain manifestations of hooliganism, will change; they will change their policies,” he said.
