An official statement on the Police of the Republic of Armenia website has confirmed earlier reports of police tracking down a group of unidentified individuals this morning for committing a “serious crime” in the Armenian capital.
According to the statement, the group was planning on carrying out another crime which they failed to do thanks to police intervention. The group put up armed resistance, which police were able to put a stop to. Police found and seized from members of the syndicate a large quantity of arms and ammunition.
A criminal case with charges of RA Criminal Code Article 316 Section 2 (“resistance to a representative of the authorities, committed with violence”) and Article 235 (“illegal procurement, transportation or carrying of weapons, ammunition, explosives or explosive devices”) has been launched, and 13 people have been arrested. One of the individuals, who was armed and resisted police and attempted to flee, has died.
Recall, Epress.am, citing witness testimonies, reported earlier that one of the men in the Mercedes that crashed into a pole on Myasnikyan Ave. in Yerevan after being chased by police earlier this morning, attempting to flee, climbed the nearby cliff and jumped to his death.
The police statement notes that the identity of the man is known; however, it was not mentioned in the statement.
An investigation is underway and the level of involvement in the crime of the men who have been detained is being determined.
The police statement adds that online news media reports that sons of various high-ranking officials are among the members of the criminal syndicate who have been detained are untrue.
