There were bruises on the arms of Hayk Kyureghyan, who was arrested today after opening fire outside a Yerevan courtroom on June 12, protesting the trial of Shant Harutyunyan and 13 other men who were arrested last November in clashes with police. The bruises were seen by head of a group of civil society members monitoring conditions in Armenian prisons and detention center Hasmik Sahakyan, reports RFE/RL's Armenian service (Azatutyun).
According to Sahakyan, the detainee claimed to have been ill-treated during and after the arrest. “He didn’t want to give details,” she told RFE/RL’s Armenian service, referring to the bruises on his arms. “He said he will speak about them later on.”
Kyureghyan insisted on the torture claims when he met with representatives of human rights ombudsman Karen Andreasyan’s office on Saturday. One of those officials, Armen Grigoryan, said, “There were traces of violence on his body. Kyureghyan said that he was beaten up at the police headquarters in Kentron [district.]”
RFE/RL's Armenian service contacted the police's public relations department and received the following response: "The preliminary investigation continues."
