Armenian-Russian Embrace is Deadly: Rubinyan

Former National Assembly Deputy Chair and former member of the Pan-Armenian National Movement Karapet Rubinyan, at a press conference today, first congratulated everyone on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, saying, however, that today Armenia’s security resource is being consumed.

“20 years later, we haven’t been able to create a country where our people could live a free and prosperous life,” he said.

Speaking on Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s recent Armenia visit and the unofficial CSTO summit in Yerevan, Rubinyan said that the “mesalliance” of Armenian-Russian relations could be very dangerous.

“Medvedev’s visit, which was accompanied by a fête saturated with obsequiousness, simply, are so-called ‘purulent pimples,’ while the actual disease, 20 years later, is our feeble policy, and through today’s ruling authorities, the Armenian-Russian embrace becomes stronger: however, being in a deadly embrace with another country is very bad,” said Rubinyan, adding that it’s no secret that Russia is striving to re-conquer former Soviet countries through military means.

According to the former Pan-Armenian National Movement member, there exists an alternative today: the government can free prisoners of conscious, eliminate monopoly, carry out serious work in the fight against corruption, and create free market conditions.

“The stronger we are, the less we’ll need other countries’ assistance; we’ll be able to protect our borders ourselves,” he concluded.
