Armenian Society’s Becoming More Savage: Babayan

The recent scandalous incidents of questionable deaths in Armenia’s armed forces have been a cause for concern for many in the country. Yet another death of a conscript took place on August 17, which has become known only yesterday.

Turning his attention to this matter, Yerevan’s Puppet Theatre Director Ruben Babayan, speaking with Epress.am, said that such customs don’t take shape in the army; rather, they have deep roots in Armenian society. He said that no minister can ever say that there will no longer be such cases.

Speaking on intelletuals’ response to this issue, Babayan said that “in some way, [he] doesn’t like” the word “intellectual.”

“We as individuals should be able to disseminate such values in society that not only in the army, but also in general, no such barbarous actions take place. Regretfully, our society today is becoming even more savage. It’s here that the intellectual has it’s share of guilt,” he said.
