Yerevan’s Komitas 3, 5a, 7 and 7/1 building residents were gathered in front of City Hall today to protest the city’s plans to cut down the trees in their residential courtyard to construct a multi-story building in its place.
Komitas 5a resident Gohar Sahakyan told Epress.am how a group of people had come a few days ago and, without identifying themselves, said that construction work would take place in the area, the current high-voltage power station would have to be moved a few meters away, and the trees will have to be cut down.
“When we raised the alarm, representatives from the Erebuni police division came and the tree cutting stopped. Prior to that, no one had introduced [to us] the City Hall decision and, essentially, both the cutting of trees and the construction of the multi-story building were illegal. But the next day, permission for the new building appeared on the City Hall website,” said Sahakyan.
“We can’t allow such a building to be built in that area, because it’s going to cast a shadow on the Komitas 5a building. Today we’ve come to City Hall; we’re demanding a meeting with the mayor. Let him come, see with his own eyes, whether it’s possible to construct a building in such a site?” asked Sahakyan.
The Yerevan resident added that they gathered signatures for a petition and sent the corresponding paperwork to all state bodies, the Rule of Law Party, Heritage Party and to the Ombudsman.
