“Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs press service has no information on the development of a Georgian-Azerbaijani confederation,” said ministry spokesperson Elhan Polukhov in an interview with 1news.az, commenting on recent reports on the matter.
Days earlier, Georgia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nino Kalandadze had told journalists that the development of a Georgian-Azerbaijani confederation would contribute to establishing regional security.
“Georgia has practically given its agreement to forming a confederation with Azerbaijan. The format of this initiative depends on diplomats’ negotiations, this is the work of diplomats,” she had said.
Following Kalandadze’s statement, Georgia’s Social Democrat party issued an official statement requiring the country’s foreign minister to explain the news of creating a confederation with Azerbaijan.
