YSU Rector Convinced He Won’t be Discharged

Recent reports in the Armenian press indicated that Yerevan State University (YSU) Rector Aram Simonyan would be discharged from his position before his term was up. The name floating around as Simonyan’s successor is none other than Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s brother, head of the History of the Armenian Church Department at YSU’s Faculty of Theology, Levon Sargsyan.

At a press conference today, Simonyan, responding to a question by Epress.am, turned his attention to this news, saying that the reports are simply rumors.

“Don’t believe the gossip, when I was elected rector, the news about my dismissal began. I am going to work till my term is up. Then, the YSU board will choose the best candidate. The president’s brother and the university’s other doctor-professors have the option of submitting their candidacy,” said Simonyan, adding that they’re not even thinking about this at the university: only the media is disseminating such reports.
