Western Countries Retreat as Russia’s Interest Strengthens in Region: SDHP

“In the last 2.5 years, Armenia has simply found itself in a trap, and that trap was created by the present authorities in power, with false elections and their unlawful actions toward the opposition,” said Social Democrat Hunchakian Party (SDHP) Chair Lyudmila Sargsyan at a press conference today.

Speaking on Russia extending the term of its military base in Armenia, the SDHP leader said that is direct proof that Russia has big plans in the region and, according to her, can’t just be like that.

“That is the result of an agreement also with the Western countries, which, realizing Russia’s interests and the strength of its current interests in the region, have retreated in some way or another. It’s evident today that the Minsk Group’s function, which is carried out by three countries, is today directly in Russia’s domain, and it’s natural that it’s already evident that Russia is a country that resolves problems here,” said Sargsyan.

She also emphasized that SDHP being a pro-Russian party, is in favor of Russia’s presence in Armenia, but that presence had to be in the domain of a mutually beneficial partnership. In Sargsyan’s words, unfortunately, that’s not the case. Speaking as well on the fact that in 1995, first president of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan signed the contract for Russia’s military base in Armenia, Sargsyan said that at the time, it was right for Ter-Petrosyan to sign the treaty.

“He signed that agreement because at that time, Armenia and Russia had relations based on a partnership, and not one of being a vassal [in a subservient or subordinate position] as is the case now,” said the SDHP chair.
