UN Assembly & a ‘Tall Idiot’: Lesson in Translation by Armenian Parliamentarian

If they vote in favor of Azerbaijan’s resolution at the UN General Assembly, then the “tall idiot” (ozun akhmakh) hopes to bring that also to the UN Security Council; in any case, the UN Assembly’s decision has no binding force, said Republican Party of Armenia MP Rafik Petrosyan while speaking to journalists today. By “tall idiot,” the National Assembly deputy meant Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Petrosyan assured the journalists that the resolution won’t make it to the UN Security Council.

He also noted that the Nagorno-Karabakh resolution put forth by Azerbaijan is a cause for amusement, and Aliyev, seeing that he’s going to lose, is grasping at straws.

In his words, if, nevertheless, the resolution is approved, for the Republic of Armenia, “it won’t be worth the paper it’s written on.”

In response to Petrosyan, Heritage Party member, MP Larisa Alaverdyan, participating in the debate, asked: “Perhaps Armenia’s foreign policy is conditioned by the ‘tall idiot’ distinction?”

Petrosyan said that that was his own choice of words and doesn’t reflect Armenia’s foreign policy.
