The Russian military base in the South Caucasus, in fact, has a much more important goal than ensuring Armenia’s safety, which in Yerevan they don’t understand, said Azerbaijani analyst Elmira Tariverdiyeva.
According to her, by extending the term of the Gyumri military base, Russia is making it known to the West and other states that the South Caucasus cannot be used against Iran. In the analyst’s opinion, Moscow is much more loyal to Iran than Washington or the countries of the European Union.
“The presence of the Russian military base in Armenia has a much broader meaning than ensuring Armenia’s security. It would be naive to believe that Moscow is focused only on resolving Yerevan’s issues. The sooner Armenia adapts to this idea, the more constructively it can approach resolving existing problems, including those connected with its neighbors,” said Tariverdiyeva, according to Trend News Agency.
