Turkish authorities say three people have died and two others have been hospitalized after becoming infected with the West Nile virus, reports The Canadian Press.
When asked by Epress.am whether Armenia has any such recorded cases, Armenia’s Ministry of Healthcare said that no such cases of West Nile virus have been recorded in Armenia up to and including September 9, 2010.
The healthcare ministry further adds that, according to official and unofficial data, the epidemic situation in the world is tense. In particular, cases have been recorded in Russia: officially, 231 cases up to and including Sept. 1, 2010; unofficially, 300 and more.
West Nile is transmitted by mosquitoes that have bitten infected birds. In a small number of cases, infection can result in encephalitis or meningitis, which can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death, CP reports.
