SEAS X: Arts Extravaganza from Istanbul to Batumi

From Sept. 14–22, over 30 people, artists and a small technical and management team from Europe will travel by road from Istanbul, Turkey, to Batumi, Georgia, as part of SEAS Xpedition Turkey.

According to the Black/North SEAS official website, “Along the way shorter stops are planned to spontaneously interchange with local people and community groups. Animations – films, workshops, short presentations – will be the tools of encounter. SEAS X begins with a laboratory on the road, the SEAS Xpedition, and is finalized in Georgia with a four-day arts festival SEAS X Batumi [Sept. 22–26].”

The four-day arts festival in Batumi presents contemporary art from the Black Sea and North Sea regions, developed within the SEAS framework. Performance, installations of video and sculpture, theatre, street performance and more will be presented in urban spaces. From the local scene there will be a performance by Batumi Drama Theatre.

About Black/North SEAS (according to the website):

“Black/North SEAS is an arts adventure that reveals in story, song and image a vision of Europe drawn from the experiences of the communities that live on its shoreline.

“Sixteen contemporary, interdisciplinary, trans-national art works in performance, music, visual arts and digital media have been commissioned by Intercult from leading European companies and artists. In 2007, each creator took a “blind date” with a fellow artist or company in a town or city on the coast of the Black and the North Seas. After their “dates” the artists proposed a new piece of art inspired by their time together and the place they visited.

“Black/North SEAS is an ongoing investigation of how artistic initiatives can lift urban re-invention and environmental issues to the forefront, through the very act of concretely confronting the contemporary city scape.”
