The number of reported cases of malaria in Europe and Central Asia has dropped dramatically in the last 15 years, according to a recently published World Health Organization (WHO) report.
According to WHO Regional Director for Europe Zsuzsanna Jakab, the number of reported cases went from over 90,000 in 1995 to 285 cases in 2009.
Eliminating malaria from the region, according to WHO, is a realistic and attainable goal. Armenia and Turkmenistan are expected to attain malaria-free status by 2010–2011.
Furthermore, the WHO European Region aims to interrupt the transmission of malaria and eliminate the disease from the remaining 6 countries affected by malaria by 2015: Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan.
